A Pair Igbo Ogba Anklets
Nigeria
Early 20th century
Brass
Diameter: both 14 inches (35.7 cm)
Provenance:
Ex collection Marshall Mount, New Jersey
Worn by young women and by "maiden maskers" these Igbo anklets were once a fashionable and symbol of high status. Because of their size and weight they forced the wearer to adopt a swinging gait in order to keep the anklets from colliding.
Geometric and figurative patterns were pounded into the flat surface. Unfortunately their meaning is lost.$5,000Further images
