This expressive and asymmetric Mumuye cult Figure embodies the dynamism characteristic of the most interesting sculpture from the Benue valley of Nigeria. The thick neck supports a compressed hemispherical head. Below the shoulders ribbon-like arms extend clear of the conical torso.
According to the literature the functions of the statuary range from guardian spirit to rainmaking device, from being used in trials as well as by healers. Until the 1970s Mumuye statuary was largely unknown outside Nigeria.
